Winter Fun in Happy Valley

It’s wintertime in Happy Valley, or at least we think it is!

Even with mild January/February weather, there is still plenty of winter fun to be had.Snow or no snow, everyone can find a place to warm up and what better way to go about it than sitting fire side and having a drink at one of the many bars, restaurants, and breweries in State College.

The Autoport offers a fire pit where you can relax, eat, and enjoy a beverage from their bar, Toast (visit site). Another fireplace you can warm up to and enjoy a good meal is The Tavern (visit site). Escape the cold air and refuel! Or escape a little farther to Gamble Mill Restaurant & Micro brewery in Bellefonte and try one of their locally brewed beers (visit site). On the topic of breweries, if you’re going to be in State College you have to stop at Ottos and try one of their flavored brews; the Red Mo is a personal favorite (visit site). Pair it with a hearty sandwich or pasta and satisfy your winter appetite.

Other than eating and drinking, there are several activities suitable for family fun, friends, dates, etc. For you outdoorsy people, Tussey Mountain has your outdoor winter sports all in one place- skiing, snowboarding, tubing, spectating, or just hanging out in the lodge! They are open Mon-Fri 12 pm-10 pm, Sat 9 am- 10 pm, and Sun 9 am- 5 pm. They also have a new Friday & Saturday night special where you can do all the activities listed above for just $16 from 7 pm- 10pm (visit site). Even if it seems like there is no snow in the forecast, Tussey Mountain is probably up there making some!

If skating is more your style, the Penn State Ice Rink offers year ‘round indoor ice skating at low costs. Go for an afternoon session, open to the public, from 1:30 pm- 3 pm and stay late on the weekends where you can skate from 10:30 pm- midnight on Fridays and 8 pm- 10 pm on Saturday nights. Admission is only $5 and skate rentals are just $2 (visit site). Also, don’t forget to come cheer on the Penn State Icers men and women’s ice hockey team and get your sports fix!

A gentler sport that warms the body AND soul on a cold winter day is yoga. It’s a great experience for young and old and breaks up the stress of the day. The heated hatha yoga classes are especially enjoyable on a freezing night in Happy Valley! There are a couple of studios to choose from and they are all affordable. Yoga in State College (visit site) and Lila Yoga (visit site) are both conveniently located downtown. And don’t forget about bowling! It’s fun for you bowlers and even non-bowlers. Go to Northland Bowl and enjoy a few games, food, and drinks while you burn some calories (visit site).

Whether you love or hate the winter you can always find fun in Happy Valley and a variety of options to satisfy your seasonal needs.
