Penn State Homecoming Welcomes 2013 Student Court

The Homecoming Royalty Committee crowned 10 students today for 2013 Homecoming Court

STATE COLLEGE, PA (Sep. 16, 2013) — Penn State Homecoming's 2013 family grew a little bigger today as 10 students were surprised in their classes with crowns and sashes as well as the news that they had been selected to participate in the Homecoming Student Court.

The Homecoming Student Court consists of five male students and female students, including John Satira (History and International Politics major), Alexa Melucci (Biology major), Brenden Dooley (Economics and Political Science major), Katelyn Mullen (Suppy Chain and Information Systems major), John Boston (Agricultural System Management major), Jessica Maynor (Criminology major), Quamayne "Rocky" Collins (Public Relations major), Rhonda Bates (Human Development and Family Studies major), Michael Barbalace (Accounting major), and Marcy Herr (Education and Public Policy major).

These selected students were chosen through a selective, multi-step process. Royalty Director Mackenize Piche said that the first step involves two separate nomination weeks, where students nominate their peers for the position on the Court once in the spring and then again in the beginning in the fall semester. "From the nominations, we send out applications for those nominated to complete, and then from the applications, it is narrowed down to 10 males and 10 females, who are then offered interviews," Piche said. "The interviews are directed by a panel composed of Penn State Faculty and staff members."

Once the panel has chosen, the initation process begins. Piche said that handing in a class schedule is required with every application, and extra precautions are taken to ensure the students get the best experience possible receiving their news. "We email their professors ahead of time to make sure it is okay to come in, and then we surprise them in front of their class with the news that they are part of the Homecoming Court," Piche said. "They are given a crown, a sash, and a balloon, and have their pictures taken. Everyone seemed really excited and grateful, and some girls even cried."

Although the hype for the student court rang throughout Happy Valley all afternoon, there were two other Homecoming courts announced today, including the University Court, consisting of all faculty and staff members, and the First-Year Court for freshman students. Those selected for the University Court were: Dr. Andrew Read, Dr. Chuck Nicholson, Marce Pancio, Dr. Darrell Velegol, Jill Garrigan, Elena Joshi, Dr. Erika Poole, and Dr. Tom Hogan. Those selected for First-Year Court were: Jessica Paugh, Parker Rohrbaugh, Dana Kyle, Lucas Rickley, Jamie Gallagher, Aly Kulp, Terrin Hartman, and Frank Liang.

The Homecoming Court will participate in all Homecoming events, attend workshops, and represent the Penn State community all throughout Homecoming week. Homecoming week begins October 5th and runs until October 12.
