Letter to Joe - The Torch of Honor for Joe Paterno
Written by Michele M Kelly
Joe Paterno was a decent and honorable man. He exemplified true leadership: his goals were to mold the young athletes in his charge, to ensure they knew the purpose of the game was not only excellence on the field but excellence in Life. To make a positive impact on the world. Make it a better place than when they arrived.
But his impact was not limited to Beaver Stadium. It reverberated through the Hub and Eisenhower, through the stacks at Pattee, across the lawn of Old Main. He was a force of nature. Every student passing the Obelisk, every Alumni returning to reminisce at the Creamery felt his presence and was changed by his positive influence.
Joe never sat on a throne, never ruled a boardroom but he was more of a leader than all the monarchs, and CEOs combined. He led by example and by his heart. He led with integrity and honor.
Through his passing we have lost a great leader who touched millions of lives. And we are better people, a better university because of him. Never forget what he stood for. He has passed the torch to us, to those who remain. And we will carry the torch to the end of our days.
Have an impact. Make a difference in the lives of those around you. Don’t let the flame die.
Honor Joe Paterno by your actions.
God Bless You, Joe. You are loved and heartily missed.
